Mellow Mushroom

2436 18th St NW, Adams Morgan

FAIR/GOOD

Many locals were all excited when Mellow Mushroom opened up in Adams Morgan.  I was unaware that this was a chain and had locations elsewhere.  This establishment is known to have some delicious pizza pie was our sponsor bar for dodgeball which didn’t last more than a couple weeks.  I always feel bad for those new establishments who try and be a sponsor bar and then realize two weeks into the season that all the league wants to do is drink excessively.  My fellow teammates were stoked about the pizza deals that were given to the league and I was sad there were no wing deals provided but that didn’t keep me from ordering the wings.  Mellow Mushroom advertises that they have “Oven Roasted Wings” which are “crisp baked wings” served in the following flavors: Hot, Mild, BBQ, Jerk, Sweet Thai Chili or Plain.   Over the course of two dodgeball weeks I ordered two different flavors:

1.       Jerk- I chose to order the Jerk wings because I am always drawn to this flavor with the mix of spices and the heat they have.  I love wings that provide a lot of good flavor.  These wings came out nice and hot served with ranch dressing and celery sticks.  I was glad that the wings were not overly saucy but they were definitely not crispy as advertised on the menu.  The chicken was cooked to perfection where it was falling off the bones but was a little unappealing with the skin being chewing and not crisp.  If they were crisp as advertised and still had meat that fell off the bone they would have been ideal because their flavor was still very good and had a great jerk seasoning. FAIR/ GOOD

2.       Sweet Thai Chili-
When I was looking at the menu and chose to order this flavor my deciding factor behind this flavor was that, it seemed different.  When I think of something sweet on a wing it is usually sticky and gives the same flavor characteristic sensation as honey. When something is Thai chili it should be hot and have some spice to it.  These wings, when they came out, were a decent size with a sweet sticky sauce on the outside but that was really all it was.  There was no heat to the sauce in regards to a spice for the Thai chili portion to the wing flavors name.  These wings were cooked really nicely with the skin crisped and the meat was kept moist.  You would assume there would be some heat in the sauce seeing there were peppers in the sauce but they were sweet peppers so the sauce over all was just sweet, sweet and more sweet.  Actually the sauce was a little odd because after you ate a wing it had a salty after taste that was kind of unappealing and left you uber thirsty and not in a way that wings would typically make you thirsty.  These are not wings I would go and order again.  I would order the Jerk wings again.  I have yet to try the Hot wings here but I have heard they are really good, Says Sue O, so I would like to try them next and would recommend maybe start with the Hot wings or the jerk wings, but definitely try the pizza.
