Comet Ping Pong

EXCELLENT

5037 Connecticut Ave NW

Comet Ping Pong is a pretty chill restaurant with some great gourmet pizza’s on their menu. Any day in the when the weather is nice you can see patrons playing ping pong out front, hence the name Comet “ping pong.” I met up here during the week with Katie D. to have some quality catch up time and try their wings. I have been told by many people that I had to make an effort to get back to my old stomping ground and try the wings at this establishment. Comet Ping Pong offers one flavor of wings which is: Comet’s Hot Wings with Dipping Sauce. When the wings came they were served in a basket and looked pretty interesting. Yes, interesting is the only word I can think of that describes my first impression of what these wings looked like and smelled like. So of course I dove in and took a bite. The wings were covered in a spicy mixer. When I say spicy mixer I do not mean they were covered in a buffalo type spice… these wings were flavored with a variety of spices from a spice rack to make a very unique a also hot flavored wing that was also slightly tangy at the same time. The wings were not fried or seemed to not be fried. Maybe they used their clay oven to bake the wings or they grilled the wing but these wings were not crispy and the meat was very juicy and moist. When you first bite into the wings you can taste a slight tang from the sauce that is on them and then there is a mild burn from the spices and red pepper flakes that cover the wings. The combination of spices that cover the wings give these wings a deep savory flavor. The dipping sauce is unique in and of itself and taste like it has some horseradish in it. It is not your typical ranch or blue cheese dressing. It isn’t overly spicy with horseradish but just adds more flavor if you like to dip your wings into sauce.

I would recommend if you go to order these wings that you ask for a side plate and remove the wings from the basket immediately.  These wings tend to give off a good amount of grease and it pools at the bottom of the basket, not too appetizing.  By removing the wings from the basket you can avoid having the soak in the grease bath and become soggier than they need to be. I would definitely come back and get these wings again and tell others to get them too.  I would rate them EXCELLENT in flavor but wish they didn’t have the grease in the basket.
