2471 18th Street NW- Adams Morgan
One of the areas of DC that I happen to frequent on a regular basis is Adams Morgan. I am usually in this part of town for a drink and not necessarily for the food. However when I heard that Smoke and Barrel was open I had to try it. Smoke and Barrel is the new BBQ restaurant that is on the upper level of Asylum. For all of you vegetarians/vegans out there don’t be too upset, they still serve the yummy vegan and vegetarian food options at Asylum and Smoke and Barrel has some options too. I cannot pass up a new BBQ joint especially one that serves wings. The options for their wings are a house recipe, brined and smoked served wet, dry or muddy. I purchased an order of the muddy wings which are the wet wings dusted with the dry rub on top. When the wings are served they come as 3 full sized chicken wings.
A full chicken wing is a wing that has the drum and flat still attached and they were freakin huge. These wings were very meaty and tender. The brining and smoking they did definitely added flavor and kept the wings from drying out. If you like sweet BBQ sauce you would love this place and these wings! The BBQ sauce that covers the wings is for sure sweet but definitely has a very good smoky flavor to it. I am not sure if the BBQ sauce is very smoky or if the smoking of the meat made it taste smoky. Either way the BBQ sauce was sweet and smoky. The salty dry rub sprinkled on top of the wings to give it the “muddy” name was a great touch that added more flavor to the wings. I asked the bartender to give me a side order of the dry rub so I could taste it alone and she kindly obliged. The dry rub is a smoky/sweet salt mixture. I wish it was a little spicier to help cut some of the sweet but that is just my own personal taste. The bar does offer a number of hot sauces so if you want to spice up your wings you are more than welcome to do so. I think next time I will try the wings with the dry rub only to see how they turn out. Overall the wings were very meaty, tender and had good flavor. I would definitely recommend them and the other food they serve as well.
