Rhino Bar & Pumphouse

3295 M Street NW

GOOD/EXCELLENT

Now that is it football season it is also prime season for eating wings, my favorite season of the year! I decided I really needed some wings and I was going to go to one of the edges of DC to get them. Yes, I traveled to the waterfront not quit but just close enough to VA that my legs quivered a little in fear that I might get sucked into the common wealth but I was strong enough to fight the pull. Rhino Bar & Pumphouse was the bar of choice for this wonderful feast of an outing. During football season they have specials on Sunday and Monday while games are playing. Sunday specials are .25 cent wings and Monday specials are .10 cent wings. Both days they also have $8.00 pitchers of domestic beer. The key line to follow is that these specials only run during game time not during the days, I had an epic fail on that.

There are two wings offered either mild or hot in 8 counts-$4.95, 12 counts- $6.95 or 24 counts- $11.95. Really what is the point of mild wings? I can only see them being eaten by the soulless so why have them on your menu. I went to Rhino bar with Troy and we decided we better get the 24 count and I am not SOULESS so we ordered the hot. When they arrived they came in a large wooden bowl hot and steaming where you could smell the hot vinegar spice on the wing. They served the wings with carrots and celery with a side of blue cheese and allowed ranch to be serve too. I will admit the baby carrots were a little too small and the celery was a stalk cut into fourths that made them bite size and made it seem like the bar was being cheap with their celery, come on it is celery… not that expensive!

Warning to all that take their first bite, do not do what I did and take a deep breath as the wing is getting close to your mouth… I did this and the vinegar and spice burning off of the wing literally choked me and I started to cough…. come on you have all been there if you have had a true buffalo wing. These wings were hot and spicy, with a crispy outside and steamy chicken inside. They had just enough heat to make them hot but not unbearable to be eating a bowl of 24. If you do not like hot wings you would probably say they were too hot but for someone who enjoys a little heat these were pretty darn good. I would definitely go back but I would make sure I was there during the time of the game so I could get the wings for .10 cents!
