Desperado’s Burgers and Bar

1342 U Street NW

FAIR

While looking for a nice outdoor stop for lunch before GW’s Fall Fest Clay S. and I strolled around U Street and stumbled upon Desperado’s Burgers and Bar. Yes, I know I probably should have ordered a burger since they are apparently known for burgers but I am more a wing person and we knew that we would be getting burgers and dogs later as we jammed out to Wale and Travie McCoy on the George Washington University campus. So of course as we strolled over the brief but doable menu there are a number of burgers to choose from, come salads and of course WINGS!

Well the wings caught my eye so we decided it was a good enough place to have a meal before our day adventure began. Desperado’s, though a comfortably divey joint, offers two style wings: Buffalo or BBQ and they can be fried or grilled. We asked the server what is the best wing to order and he said we should get the fried buffalo wing so we went with his decision. The wings came out and they had that vinegary, spicy burn smell to them which is always gets the mouth to water. However I don’t know if I would order them again I will rate them at fair. If they were a fried wing I would expect the outside to be crispy and the meat inside to be hot and juicy, too bad these were not. The outside was hot and spicy covered in sauce but not crispy enough from being fried. Whatever breading they used got too soggy from the sauce they covered the wing in since they did not flash fry the wing enough so to fried outer layer turned quite gooey, and gooey wings are gross. Overall the flavor of the wing wasn’t too bad and the spice was a typical buffalo sauce not too hot and was comfortable. However I may have learned my lesson to not order wings from a place known for burgers.
